Most installs land at the prices above. The figures that move a quote are physical — how far the cable runs, what is behind the wall, and what the switchboard can already handle. The things that move the price:

Charging from solar and a home battery

If you have solar, we configure solar-favouring and scheduled charging as part of commissioning — the car charges from your own generation or the cheapest tariff window by default. The Teltonika EVC2, Evnex E2 Core and myenergi Zappi all support solar diversion and load management. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program (live from 2026) brings home battery storage costs down, which makes solar charging cheaper again.

Not every charger handles solar the same way. The Teltonika EVC2 and myenergi Zappi do genuine solar diversion — they back off grid import when the panels are not producing enough. The Evnex E2 Core has solar diversion built in; the E2 Flex can add it via a software upgrade. If you are planning to add a battery too, the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program (live from 2026) cuts the upfront cost of home battery storage by around 30% and is not means-tested (RACV), which shortens the payback on charging from your own stored solar overnight.

Worked example: powerpoint vs wall charger

Charging from a standard powerpoint via the portable "granny charger" that comes with most EVs is fine in a pinch — it is slow (around 2.4 kW) and ties up a GPO. A dedicated 7.4 kW wall charger is roughly three times faster and runs on its own circuit, so the rest of the house is not affected. For most Melbourne EV owners who drive daily, a dedicated charger pays for itself in convenience inside the first few months.

The other reason a dedicated circuit matters: a standard powerpoint on a shared circuit can trip when the kettle, the charger and anything else on that circuit run at once. A dedicated charger on its own RCBO-protected circuit does not have that problem, and it is wired to handle the sustained load that EV charging pulls for hours at a time — which is exactly what AS/NZS 3000 asks for.

The process, start to finish

  1. Site check — we look at the switchboard, cable run, mounting surface and where the car parks. Fixed-price quote on the spot or same day.
  2. Install — typically half a day. Dedicated circuit run from the switchboard, charger mounted and level, RCBO-protected and wired to AS/NZS 3000. We route conduit neatly and make good as we go.
  3. Commission — Wi-Fi pairing, app setup, off-peak schedule, load verification.
  4. Certify — COES lodged with Energy Safe Victoria. You get the certificate.
  5. Handover — we walk you through the app and schedule, and clean up.

Is a home charger worth it over a powerpoint?

For a daily driver, yes. A dedicated charger means faster charging, no tripping hazard from a draped extension lead, no shared circuit with the kitchen or laundry, and scheduling so you charge on off-peak. For occasional drivers doing short trips, a powerpoint may be enough — we will tell you straight if that is the case after the site check.

When a powerpoint charge is genuinely fine: you drive under 30 km most days, you plug in overnight, and you never need a full top-up in a hurry. The moment you are doing back-to-back commutes or a weekend trip where the car needs a full battery by morning, the dedicated charger earns its keep.

Compliance and certification

Every EV charger install in Victoria must be done by a Licensed Electrical Worker working under a Registered Electrical Contractor, and a Certificate of Electrical Safety (COES) must be lodged with Energy Safe Victoria before the job is signed off. We carry REC 35801, A-Grade A62716 and ARCtick L186818, and $20 million public liability. You get the COES — it is your proof the work is certified and your warranty on the charger stays valid.
